The popular Robert Jordan fantasy series Wheel Of Time will be coming to the big screen as well as the small, it seems.
If youāre a fantasy fan, youāve no doubt heard of Robert Jordan and his seminal
Wheel Of Time series of novels. The books are amongst the most revered in the genre, so it was no surprise when a few years ago, Amazon announced that itād picked up the small screen rights to the series and would be turning it into a TV series. What
is mildly surprising then is the news that the rights to a film series have also been snapped up, this time by iwot productions and Radar Pictures. All meaning weāll be getting two incarnations of the fantasy saga.
Whatās more, iwot has announced that its planned theatrical trilogy will, at least in the first instance, draw from far before the booksā timeline. The films will be taking place a millennia beforehand, and as it states, ācomplement the storylines soon to be featured in the TV series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios.ā
The movies will be set in āin a period known as the “Age of Legends”— a futuristic utopia powered by a magical force shared by men and women known as the “One Power.” When an unspeakable evil is unleashed upon the world, civilisation descends into chaos, and war blankets the globe. When men using the One Power become insane and destroy much of the planet, a small band of women unite under the White Tower, and are humanity’s last hope of survival.ā
Zack Stentz, screenwriter of both
Thor and
X-Men: First Class is penning the project, and had this to say: “I’ve been a fan of Robert Jordan’s work for many years, and it is especially his allusions to the origins and backstory of
The Wheel of Time that I have always found most intriguing. I’m excited to be bringing this era Robert Jordan conceptualised to life, a fusion of the fantasy and science-fiction genres, the
Age of Legends is a tale of paradise lost, as a futuristic Garden of Eden devolves into a dangerous and broken world.”
It all sounds intriguing, and with the TV series on the way too, Jordan fans may well be spoilt for choice. Weāll keep you posted as we hear more.
