Zack Snyder on trying to get Justice League back in cinemas – and that HBO Max/Warner Bros debate.
Zack Snyder’s films can tend to be pretty divisive, but no matter how you feel about them, it’s clear to see that the director constructs his movies for the big screen. According to Dark Horizons, Snyder has been talking about the possibility of his recut
Justice League – due next year – getting a theatrical release, and to say he’s keen would be something of an understatement.
He’s also been chatting about the film’s content, suggesting it would earn an R-rating from the American censors.

In his words, “I’m a huge fan and a big supporter of the cinematic experience, and we’re already talking about
Justice League playing theatrically at the same time it’s coming to HBO Max”. He added that “the movie is insane and so epic and is probably rated R – that’s one thing I think will happen, that it will be an R-rated version, for sure. We haven’t heard from the MPAA, but that’s my gut”.
As to why? “There’s one scene where Batman drops an f-bomb. Cyborg is not too happy with what’s going on with his life before he meets the Justice League, and he tends to speak his mind. And Steppenwolf is pretty much just hacking people in half”.
Snyder went on to talk about his thoughts regarding Warner Bros’ controversial decision to port its entire 2021 release schedule of films over to HBO Max for a simultaneous theatrical and streaming release. Whilst he didn’t go as far as some directors in criticising the studio, he certainly didn’t talk the idea up, suggesting it was poorly conceived. “It felt like a pretty bold move and that maybe the implication wasn’t 100% thought out”, he argued.
“I thought we were kind of already getting very close to the ideal theatrical window where you still had marketing material out there and you hadn’t forgotten about the film by the time it came out on DVD or streaming. I thought we were starting to hone in on that sweet spot, but this kind of throws a monkey wrench in the works”.
Zack Snyder’s
Justice League is expected to land at some point in 2021. We’ll keep you posted on more news on the film as we hear it.
