As the preorders for the on-demand release are refunded, the plan remains for X-Men: The New Mutants to finally see the inside of a cinema.
Last week, the much-delayed X-Men: The New Mutants – a movie that was shot in 2017 and has been in some degree of limbo ever since – looked like it was finally getting a release sorted. After having its latest April cinema bow pulled due to the current lockdown, the movie was then out of the blue made available last week to preorder as a video on demand release.
Was Disney, then, cutting its losses on the picture and bypassing a cinema release altogether?
Apparently not. Even though the preorder was live for a few days, it’s now been removed and those who took advantage of it refunded. It’s worth noting that there was no release date listed, but people were able to get their order in.
It turns out that the heart of the problem was automation within the Amazon empire. That the firm had automatically added the digital release to its store, based on the planned theatrical release last month. When nobody in the Amazon system updated the release, it was duly added for order as per the store’s usual cycle.
Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is still planning to release the film in cinemas, although quite when that will be remains guesswork at the moment. As we hear more, we’ll let you know…
