Warner Bros rules out Suicide Squad: The Ayer Cut

You wonā€™t be getting the David Ayer cut of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros has specifically confirmed. We think we’re at a point where we can call Zack Snyder’s Justice League something of a success. It cost some $70m to realise, but it doesn’t seem to matter what website you visit at the moment, it seems to be the key topic of conversation (outside of pandemics and stuff, of course). Furthermore, no shortage of people appear to have watched it already. Does this, then, hold the door open for other directors to go back and have another go at re-editing their movies, that may have been previously ‘heavily influenced’ by studio executives? Well, if it does, then not yet. Assumed to be next in line was director David Ayer, who did battle with Warner Bros over the final cut to his 2016 hit Suicide Squad. Whilst very much a box office success, the film got a bit of a critical mauling, and he’s not involved in the next film in the series, the James Gunn-helmed The Suicide Squad. We’re due that later this year. However, whilst Ayer has suggested there’s a better cut of his original film, Warner Bros isn’t giving him the keys back to the cupboard to find it. This has been explicitly confirmed by the CEO of WarnerMedia Studios, Ann Sarnoff. Chatting to Variety, she said in response to being questioned on this particular movie, “we won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut” of Suicide Squad. But the sounds of it, it’s going to take quite the fan campaign to change her mind. Might be wrong, but not sensing one is just around the corner.
