Warner Bros and Trafalgar Releasing are remastering and re-releasing ABBA: The Movie just in time for the group’s 50th anniversary.
First released in 1977,
ABBA: The Movie is now being remastered and re-released for the group’s 50th anniversary. The film was shot during their 1977 Australian tour, when the Swedish group were at the height of their popularity.
In the US and Canada, the film is being shown for two nights only in May – the 12th and 14th. There’s no news of a UK release yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens at some point. The movie, directed by Lasse Hallström, depicts both full-length performances of hits like Dancing Queen and Name Of The Game, as well as including backstage footage.
There’s also a mocumentary-style subplot focused on a country radio disc-jockey who’s desperately trying to get an interview with the band. Unsurprisingly, their bodyguard does everything he can to prevent this.
“This will be such a fun event for fans to come together and experience ABBA on the big screen for the first time since the 1977 release,” said Trafalgar’s SVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions Kymberli Frueh. “We hope everyone will dig deep into their closets to find vintage 70s outfits to wear.”
The film has been restored at 2K resolution, with dirt, scratches, and stains digitally removed. The audio has also been restored.
