The long-gestating next film in the Pitch Black series could finally be moving into action, according to its star.
It’s been seven years since we last revisited Riddick, one of Vin Diesel’s most celebrated characters. And although a follow film to Riddick, the third film in the Pitch Black series was announced some six years ago now, there’s been seemingly little movement with it. The development of Furia, as its being called, may have been slowed down by the plans to create a hard-edged TV show to accompany the film, with the logistical problems that can be caused by running two huge projects concurrently for different platforms causing issues in the past. The big example there is the planned dual platform adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower that ultimately never materialised in its small screen version.
However, TV show aside, the new Riddick film at least seems to be pressing ahead. Either that or Vin Diesel is simply using the power of social media to will it into existence. He published this short message on Instagram yesterday, which at the time of writing has garnered almost 1.5 million likes:
Incredible meeting today, thanks team you know who you are… Let’s just say Furia may be closer than you think. #Riddick”.
David Twohey, the writer and director of Pitch Black is reportedly onboard the project alongside Diesel, and one can imagine that the last couple of years may have made it more difficult to get the film and its companion series, Merc City, off the ground.
Hopefully though, everything is in place for Diesel to begin work on the next entrant to the Pitch Black series. As Diesel himself owns the rights to the character, he and his team can shop the project around, perhaps meaning that a studio who also has a streaming platform might see the potential in a film and TV series package. That’s all speculation for now though, when we hear more, you can be sure we’ll let you know.
