Viggo Mortensen suggests David Cronenberg may be headed back to his more ‘disturbing’ roots, for their next project together.
Well, this one certainly made our ears prick up. Viggo Mortensen has been chatting to GQ (via Collider) about his directorial debut. The film, Falling, saw him take on the daunting task of directing the mighty Lance Henriksen, as well as starring opposite him. Mortensen also cast serial collaborator David Cronenberg in a small role too.
Mortensen and Cronenberg have previously worked together to bring us two memorable violent thrillers in the form of 2005’s A History Of Violence and 2007’s Eastern Promises, with Cronenberg directing and Mortensen starring.
Now, Mortensen has revealed that he may be re-teaming with Cronenberg again. He’s hinted that their next planned project will see the director returning to his disquieting origins, where films such as Videodrome, Scanners and The Fly made him a cult favourite.
As Mortensen states, “it’s something [Cronenberg] wrote a long time ago, and he never got it made. Now he’s refined it, and he wants to shoot it. Hopefully, it’ll be this summer we’ll be filming. I would say, without giving the story away, he’s going maybe a little bit back to his origins… It’s very interesting. It’s almost like a strange film noir story. It’s disturbing and it’s good, I think. But since his origins, he’s obviously developed in terms of technique and self-assurance as a director.”
This definitely sounds interesting to us, not least to see how the director could combine his more polished style with the more outrageous elements of his earlier work. Of course, Cronenberg’s son, Brandon, has been making waves of his own, with the acclaimed, identity-swapping Possessor, which contains clear shades of Cronenberg Sr. It’ll be fun to see if that influence between father and son runs both ways.
