Much like Conan the Barbarian, Kane emerged from fantasy books of the 1970s – and now a film take on the character is happening.
Producers Roy Lee, Andrew Trapani and Steven Schneider have secured the rights to Kane, the series of cult fantasy novels penned by author Karl Edward Wagner. The stories focus on an immortal anti-hero who is described as ‘a gothic hero-villain’, part warrior, part sorcerer, but more cerebral than the character of Conan the Barbarian, to whom he is sometimes compared.
The production trio, who have some huge titles to their name including IT and Paranormal Activity, have secured the rights to the character according to The Hollywood Reporter. Whilst it hasn’t yet been confirmed whether the character will feature in a series or a film, there’s plenty of scope for creativity with the title. Although the majority of the novels and short stories were set in a pre-Medieval world, some of them took place in the then-present (that being the 1970s/early 1980s).
The setup for the world in which Kane’s adventures take place certainly sounds intriguingly cinematic: ‘in a visceral world steeped in ancient history, with bloody conflicts and dark mysteries. Wagner wove gothic horror elements into this pre-medieval landscape, taking Kane on fantastic sagas involving war, romance, triumph and tragedy.’
