The Wicked film wonāt now be arriving at the end of 2021, but that date was already looking shaky before current events hit.
It’s been a long time coming, and now it looks as though we’re going to have to wait even longer for it: the movie of the hit musical
Wicked has encountered another delay.
In a release date shuffle from Universal Pictures that’s seen
Minions 2 shift to summer 2021, the sequel
Sing 2 has in turn moved to December 22
nd 2021, the release date that had been earmarked for
Wicked. No new release date for the
Wicked movie has been announced as of yet.
However, it’s not clear whether the
Wicked delay is entirely down to the Coronavirus lockdown.
Back in February, we interviewed composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the stage musical, for our podcast. And we asked him then if he felt the film was likely to hit its then-planned December 2021 release.
“Not a prayer. And I think that was always a number that could put out there. Listen, there’s going to be a film of Wicked, and we are working on it. I hope Universal isn’t angry at me for saying not a prayer, but you might as well know, it’s not going to be the end of 2021. We’re still working on the screenplay. Stephen Daldry is the director of course, I know he’s working with designers as well as helping develop the screenplay. I know we’re making progress”.
“I just don’t see sitting here in February 2020 that [there’s] any way that can be completed by the end of 2021”.
The specific part of the conversation can be found just past the 33 minute mark, here…
More on the
Wicked movie as we hear it, including when we hear of a new release date.
