Filmmaking leads the way as the UK screen industry once again celebrates a record annual spend. More here.
Once again, the BFI has announced that the UK screen industry has achieved a record level of spending with the sector soaring to a grand total of £6.27bn, eclipsing 2021’s previously-record haul of £5.64b by some way. There’s been no post-pandemic hangover for the industry, which has roared back, especially in the filmmaking sector in which spending leapt up 27% last year on productions such as Civil War, Kraven the Hunter, Barbie and Meg 2: The Trench.
BFI CEO Ben Roberts has spoken about the spend, adding that “our world-class talent, craft and production services, and vital film and TV tax reliefs, have enabled the UK to be a major player in a highly competitive global industry. Further investment in expanding studio space UK-wide to meet production demand will continue to build on this economic success and create further jobs.”
Challenges in recruitment lie ahead for the industry, whilst it’s important to note that these huge figures pale in comparison to the profits that the majority of these productions will make for companies and studios outside of the UK. Still though, it’s an impressive announcement nonetheless as the UK continues to position itself as one of the world’s leading production hubs.
