The government is set to give the greenlight for the reopening of cinemas from the first week of July, it’s been revealed.
With cinema chains in the UK looking to open their doors from July 10
th – that’s the date that Cineworld for one has announced – the one formal hurdle ahead of them was the government giving them the greenlight to do so. Now it transpires that Boris Johnson will be making an appearance today to announce that they can indeed open their doors.
The announcement is being widely reportedly already as coming today, with Johnson set to make a statement in Parliament this lunchtime. At the same announcement, he will likely lower the two metre social distancing rule down to one metre. Not that the people at my local supermarket have been too fussed about two metres being adhered to in the first place.
There’s still some question marks over how much the relaxing of measures is politically rather than scientifically driven, but you don’t have to look too far in other places on the world wide web to see debate over that.
For the purposes of cinemas at least, it looks like we’re a couple of weeks away in the UK from finding out just how much appetite people have for returning to the multiplexes.
