TRON 3 director reportedly confirmed

It’s still not been given the official greenlight, but signs are now looking very positive for TRON 3 it seems. We’ve already seen a couple of false dawns when it comes to the long-awaited and oft-rumoured reveal of the third film in the TRON saga. Back in 2017, a follow-up project to 2010’s TRON: Legacy, starring Jared Leto, was said to have been canned and since then information has been scarce. However, last month, it was revealed that Disney were in the hunt for a director for TRON 3, and now it seems that search is over. Deadline is reporting that Garth Davis, director of Lion and Mary Magdalene, has signed on to make the third film. Davis’ appointment follows the trend of hiring a revered director with established indie credentials and giving them a tentpole project to work with. It’s an approach that has generally worked well for the Disney-owned Marvel Studios in the past, and it is said to have been Davis’ repeated lobbying for the film that was instrumental in his appointment. Interestingly, Jared Leto’s involvement has also been reported as both star and producer. This in turn suggests that Disney’s plans may be to follow through with its existing plans for the franchise, as a storyline involving Leto was rumoured to be the key element for the TRON follow-up that was quietly shelved several years ago. With TRON: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski, seemingly not involved then, perhaps due to creative decisions, more likely perhaps due to scheduling, it seems that we won’t be getting a direct sequel to Legacy and the fate of Quorra and Sam Flynn, the lead characters from that film, may remain unexplored.
