20th Century Studios has reportedly shifted release strategies for the upcoming horror The Boogeyman following excellent test screenings.
Stephen King adaptations have always been a seemingly-guaranteed occurrence on our screens, with the only other certainty being that their quality is mixed. Throughout the years, we’ve seen filmmakers of wildly-different statures attempt to adapt King’s work, with the author himself not as jealously protective of his stories as some writers are when it comes to adaptations.
As such, the quality of film adaptations of King’s work tends to be somewhat uneven. In recent years alone, we’ve seen quality takes such as Doctor Sleep and duffers like Firestarter. However, according to reports circulating at the moment, the buzz around The Boogeyman, an adaptation of King’s short story from his Night Shift collection, is so strong that it’s led to 20th Century Studios altering its distribution strategy for the film with the studio looking at a wide theatrical release rather than a streaming debut.
The same strategy paid off handsomely for Paramount last year with Smile and 20th Century will be hoping for a similar effect. The story ‘follows a sixteen-year-old (Sophie Thatcher) and her younger sister, still reeling from the death of their mother, as they are targeted by a supernatural boogeyman after their psychologist father (Chris Messina) has an encounter with a desperate patient in their house.’
Host and Dashcam’s Rob Savage directs and Vivien Lyra Blair, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland and Madison Hu star. The film is set to release in June and until then, you can catch that trailer below…
