The career of the indie filmmaker, turned pop-culture voice of the masses, will be explored in upcoming feature documentary Clerk.
They say that timing is everything, and it certainly seems so for Kevin Smith, the indie filmmaker who has made a career of, depending how you look at it, either pre-emptively understanding or simply happening upon, pop-culture trends.
As a young New Jersey native, he was inspired to make the 90s indie slacker classic, Clerks after seeing a Richard Linklater movie by the name of Slacker. Clerks would go on to become an early poster child for for the ‘Indiewood’ explosion of the 1990s as independent cinema took root in Hollywood. Smith would, despite some torrid failures too, also be ahead of the curve in changing the way independent films handled exhibition and distribution, with films such as Red State. As well as positioning himself as a prominent voice in the 21st Century pop-culture boom as an eminent podcaster.
Now, frequent Kevin Smith collaborator Malcom Ingram, has directed a feature-length documentary about Smith’s career, entitled Clerk.
The film features interviews from contemporaries of Smith’s, including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Penn Jillette, Jason Lee, Stan Lee, Richard Linklater, Justin Long, Jason Mewes, Scott Mosier and Jason Reitman. Smith, as he often does with his more recent releases, is also taking the film on the road, personally fronting screenings with a Q&A.
Clerk arrives ahead of Clerks 3, Smith’s trilogy entrant to the film that made his name. That film is set to be released sometime next year.
