Catch your first glimpse of White Noise, Noah Baumbach’s follow-up to 2019’s Marriage Story, ahead of its release on Netflix.
With the mainstream success of Marriage Story in 2019, helped in part by its wide release on Netflix, Noah Baumbach brought his unique ability to portray human relationships with sensitivity, humour and honesty to a wider audience. The filmmaker would receive an Oscar nod for that film too. For his next project however, Baumbach has parted with tradition and adapted an existing story rather than writing his own original screenplay. That is set to be White Noise, based on the novel by Don Delillo.
Adam Driver and Baumbach’s partner and most frequent collaborator, Greta Gerwig star in the film. Raffey Cassidy, Alessandro Nivola, Jodie Turner-Smith, Lars Eidinger, Don Cheadle and Andre Benjamin also feature. The story follows ‘a professor of Hitler studies (Driver) at a liberal arts college in Middle America who’s now on his fourth wife (Gerwig). When an airborne toxic event unleashes a lethal black chemical cloud, they must face the danger of death together.’
With some wonderful films on his resume, it’s fair to say that Noah Baumbach has barely put a foot wrong as a filmmaker since the wonderful divorce comedy, The Squid And The Whale back in 2005 cemented him as a director who excels at finding humour in desperate situations. An airborne toxic event certainly qualifies as such and we’re looking forward to seeing the filmmaker tangle with material that looks slightly more absurdist than the straight drama of Marriage Story. Netflix is financing the production, with Driver and Gerwig set to reunite on screen for the first time since they starred in 2012’s Frances Ha, also directed by Baumbach.
Production is currently ongoing on Baumbach’s next collaboration with Gerwig. That of course is the Barbie movie they have co-written which Gerwig is directing for Margot Robbie’s production company. Robbie also stars. As for White Noise, no release date has yet been set but the film is set to open both the Venice and the New York film festivals. We’ll bring you a release date just as soon as we hear it.
