Sonyās ensemble drama is set to tackle the Gamestop meme stock story that rocked the financial world a couple of years ago. Eat The Rich, the Netflix documentary series that dropped earlier this year, shone a light back onto the remarkable Gamestop/Wall Street story which dominated the headlines a year or two back. It saw three or four competing film projects announced that would all tackle the story of a bunch of Reddit users who beat the Wall Street billionaires at their own game.
The highest profile take on this story is Dumb Money, Sonyās ensemble drama which is set to release in September. The film will follow āa group of Reddit users who manage to throw Wall Street’s established stock investors into a state of panic, to the point where one app took the controversial step of suspending trading on videogame store Gamestop’s stocks.ā
Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Shailene Woodley, Sebastian Stan, Pete Davidson, Nick Offerman, Vincent D’Onofrio, Anthony Ramos, and Dane DeHaan co-star in the film based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Antisocial Network.
Along with the promising cast, this project is the one that has secured the rights to adapt Ben Mezrich’s book, which documents all of the ins and outs of the Gamestop shares controversy. Mezrich is also the author of The Accidental Billionaires, that would go on to be adapted by Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher into 2010’s The Social Network, generally considered to be a landmark film in detailing this type of corporate misadventure and flawed human behaviour.
I, Tonya's Craig Gillespie directing the film, reuniting him with Rogen and Stan as the trio worked together on the drama series, Pam And Tommy. Thereās a slew of highly-watchable actors and a gripping story here, all Gillespie has to do is figure out how to make the complexities of stock trading simple enough for the uninitiated and Dumb Money could be a standout film in the autumn schedule. Hereās that trailer belowā¦
