Stephen King adaptation The Life Of Chuck will be directed by none other than horror maestro, Mike Flanagan: more here.
Well, this is exciting. FilmNation has announced a rather hot property that it has put together for the upcoming Cannes Market. Mike Flanagan, director of the Stephen King adaptation,
Doctor Sleep has signed up to helm another film based on King’s work:
The Life Of Chuck. What’s more, the project (which features stories from three different timelines) has announced two of its leads: Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill.
Deadline broke the news regarding the project, which is based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology
If It Bleeds. It’s three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumour at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.’
Flanagan is no stranger to haunted house stories having created the hugely successful
The Haunting Of Hill House and
The Haunting Of Bly Manor series for Netflix. He’s also currently at work on a take on Edgar Allen Poe’s
The Fall Of The House Of Usher for Netflix, which is also set to be a series.
We’ve long argued that one of Flanagan’s other Netflix series –
Midnight Mass – is the best Stephen King story never written by King and it was also Flanagan that famously got King to agree to the use of iconography from Kubrick’s take on
The Shining in
Doctor Sleep. That in itself was quite an achievement, given King’s prolonged and public disdain for Kubrick’s film. There’s certainly a trust between the two creators that will hopefully lead to a high quality take on King’s story.
King has dabbled in many tones throughout his five decades as an author, and
The Life of Chuck is said to evoke the same mood as
Stand By Me,
The Shawshank Redemption and
The Green Mile. We’re certainly onboard for this one and we’ll let you know who picks the project up at Cannes when the festival gets underway in a week’s time.
