A new film featuring Tom Hanks has broken the record for a pre-sale at the European Film Market.
Tom Hanks’ return to comedy in the upcoming
A Man Called Otto has pre-sold at the European Film Market for $60m, a record amount for that event.
Sony emerged triumphant in the battle for the film, ensuring that the project will see a theatrical release following lots of interest, including from several streaming services. The previously held record sale at the EFM was $55m for
The Pale Blue Eye, the upcoming Edgar Allen Poe movie starring Christian Bale.
UPDATE: Sony has now set a release date for the film, in the US at least, of December 25th 2022. We’ll keep you posted when we get a UK date.
A Man Called Otto is penned by celebrated screenwriter David Magee, who has previously penned
Finding Neverland and
Life Of Pi. World War Z director, Marc Forster, who also helmed
Finding Neverland, will be in the director’s chair. Filming on this one is set to start later this month in Pittsburgh. Sony has shelled out the cash for this one, and its admirable to see the studio still keenly supporting interesting movie star-led projects aimed at theatrical releases, despite the cinematic landscape shifting around them.
The film is an English-language remake of
A Man Called Ove, A Swedish-language film which was nominated for two Oscars. The story will follow ‘Otto (Hanks), a temperamental widower who slowly finds the value in developing friendships with his neighbours as he keeps a close watch on the community.’
We’re certainly excited to see Hanks returning to cinemas after a sojourn into streaming services, and we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
