Borderlands director Eli Roth won’t be present as the long-running project goes back before the cameras for reshoots.
It feels like we’ve been waiting a very long time for Borderlands, the upcoming film adaptation of the wild and popular first person shooter video game. The project went into production in April of 2021 with post-production reportedly beginning in the summer of the same year. Even with the pandemic in mind, that’s still a mightily-long wait for the film, although anybody that’s played the game can probably imagine the significant amount of post-production work that might be required.
We’ve learned that more filming is now required too, and it won’t be director Eli Roth coming back to handle the fortnight of reshoots that are set to take place imminently. Instead, Deadpool's Tim Miller will be handling the film’s extra footage, although reports state that buzz suggesting that Eli Roth has been fired from the project are very wide of the mark.
Instead, it looks like Roth has other commitments with his Thanksgiving film, based on the trailer in his 2007 Grindhouse collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, all set to shoot in March for Spyglass Entertainment. The changing of directors is said to be ‘amicable’ although the news will no doubt conjure up memories of Zack Snyder being replaced for the Justice League reshoots, a move that below the veneer of public perception was anything but amicable.
In the upcoming action film, ‘Cate Blanchett plays Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past who reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). She forms an alliance with an unexpected team – former elite mercenary Roland (Kevin Hart), pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt) and her rhetorically challenged protector Krieg (Florian Munteanu), the persistent wiseass robot Claptrap (Jack Black), and mentally unstable scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis).
If the film can recreate the madcap spirit of the games we’ll be in for a treat, especially with the talent involved. Considering pre-production began a full three years ago now we’d hope to see this one at some point later this year but wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t arrive until 2024. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
