The beloved heavy metal mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap is winding up for an encore, with original director Rob Reiner at the helm.
Rewind to the late 80s and early 90s and Castle Rock, the production company headed up by Rob Reiner, was responsible for some of the most beloved movies of that era. A Few Good Men, Before Sunrise and When Harry Met Sally… are just a few of the classic films that came out of Castle Rock, a memorable run that would dwindle by the turn of the century and eventually see the company folded into Warner Bros.
Castle Rock relaunched its film division in October, still under the ownership of Warner Bros, and the production company have announced its first project: This Is Spinal Tap II. The legendary ‘rock doc’ spoof was Rob Reiner’s first film as director and it’s been announced that he be will returning to helm the sequel. Micheal McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest are all confirmed to be on board too, working on the script and reprising their onscreen roles as England’s loudest and perhaps dimmest, heavy metal band.
Reiner has outlined the plot the film will follow, explaining that the absence of the late Tony Hendra (who played their manager) will be the inciting incident that sparks the band’s resurrection: “The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, he passed away,” states Reiner. “In reality, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian’s widow inherited a contract that said Spinal Tap owed them one more concert. She was basically going to sue them if they didn’t. All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.”
The film has been slated for a March, 19 2024 release. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
