With the long-term backing of Netflix providing a firm financial foundation, the studio is set to double in size by 2023.
Shepperton Studios has announced plans to double in size by 2023, adding around 1 million square feet of production capacity to its current size. The expansion will see the studio increase its capacity to 17 sound stages, although most of them will continue to be occupied by Netflix as the streaming giant has also renewed its contract with the studio. It means Shepperton will continue to be Netflix’s UK home and one if its largest production hubs.
The move further underlines the continuing boom in UK film production, and is surely great news for those employed in the British film industry along with those considering it as a career. Shepperton has stated that the expanded facility will possess capacity for non-Netflix productions as well, addressing what has been a real concern for some smaller UK productions over the last decade. But just how much capacity this might be remains unclear.
Smaller studios also continue to pop up around the country as studio space near London becomes increasingly difficult to find. Whether the expansion will provide tangible benefits to productions beyond Netflix’s is a question that will be answered in good time, but for the skilled and talented people working inside of the British film industry, this will certainly come as good news, as the sector continues to expand.
More as we hear it.
