It’s not the most popular James Bond film, but it’s one for completists: there’s a new Casino Royale Blu-ray on the way.
An anomaly in the annals of James Bond movie history is the spoof take on Ian Fleming’s book, Casino Royale. A movie that’d perhaps be pretty much forgotten were it not for the fact that it’s a James Bond adaptation, 1967’s Casino Royale assembled a starry case – Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress, David Niven, Orson Welles, Woody Allen. It then used it to send up the 007 movies, with at best pretty mixed results.
That the film was able to exist was because Ian Fleming had sold the rights to the book separately to the rest of the James Bond novels, and it was only at the turn of the century that Bond producers Eon got hold of those rights themselves for the subsequent ‘official’ adaptation.
