Disney is aiming to have the next Planet Of The Apes film before cameras later this year, with The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball directing.
As this story is being penned, the director of the last two Planet Of The Apes movies – Matt Reeves – is launching his latest film, The Batman, into cinemas. It’s been known for some time that the now Disney-owned franchise was set to return again, with the mantle this time being handed over to Wes Ball, the director of The Maze Runner trilogy. Ball was in the midst of development on a $100m+ movie of The Mouse Guard when Disney acquired Fox, and then promptly shut down the project. But it found him another seat steering one of cinema’s most enduring franchises.
Now, 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell has revealed that the new Planet Of The Apes film is moving forward. Confirming that Wes Ball is still directing the feature, he’s told The Hollywood Reporter that “we are expecting a draft very shortly”, and that the plan – presuming the latest script passes muster is “we hope to go by summer, early fall”.
This one might actually – unlikely the majority of 20th Century Studios’ upcoming output – see the inside of a cinema too. Plot and casting details are sparse, as you might expect, for the minute. As we hear more though, we’ll let you know.
