Jason Momoa and Matt Berry are set to lead the cast of the Minecraft movie, which is going to start filming in New Zealand this summer.
Crikey. After a development period that’s edging towards a decade, the planned big screen take on Minecraft is finally set to go before the cameras this year. There have been false starts on this particular project before, but presumably fresh impetus has been given by the huge success enjoyed by Super Mario and Sonic The Hedgehog on the big screen in recent times.
The version of the Minecraft film we’re going to see hasn’t yet finished casting, but we know that Jason Momoa and Matt Berry are on board. Furthermore, it’s being directed by Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess.
KFTV now reports that filming will be getting underway in New Zealand this summer, with a start of production date currently listed as August 7th. We’re expected a live action movie with a fair amount of CG elements – we’re hardly going out on a limb there – but further details are fairly thin on the ground at the moment.
We do know when the film’s out, though. Warner Bros has given it a release date of April 4th 2025. Expect a fair amount more news before then.
