Confirming last Novemberās widely-reported rumours, Kaitlyn Dever has officially been cast in the key role of Abby in The Last Of Usā second season. Sheāll be joining a returning Pedro Pascal as the grizzled Joel and Bella Ramsey as his young charge, Ellie, as the production on the show gets underway early this year.
In a joint statement published by The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said of Dever, “Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material. Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro, Bella and the rest of our family.”

The Last Of Usā second season is said to broadly follow the plot of the second videogame, The Last Of Us Part II ā and if youāve played that, youāll know that Abby has a pivotal role in that story that we wonāt spoil here. Itās probably sufficient to simply share the official character description written by HBO: āAbby is a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved.”
Of course, The Last Of Usā first season departed from its videogame inspiration in multiple refreshing and award-winning ways, not least in its third episode, Long, Long Time, in which Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett essentially got their own one-shot relationship drama.
Weāll be fascinated to see what divergences and twists Mazin and Druckmann have in store for the next series.
The Last Of Us series 2 will return to HBO in 2025.
