Spider-Man’s domination of the box office leaves the new The King’s Man and The Matrix Resurrections in its rear view mirror.
Against the backdrop of the Omicron Covid surge, it’s all the more of an achievement that the film Spider-Man: No Way Home has performed to quite the level it has. The film has now grossed a staggering $600m+ in the US alone, and its global take is closing in on $1.4bn. With Sony keeping the film in cinemas, and competition struggling against it, the film might just close in on $2bn before it’s done. Given that no movie had crossed $1bn since the dawn of the pandemic, it’s had an incredible run.
But it’s left two competitors pretty much blasted out of its way. Matthew Vaughn’s solid Kingsman prequel The King’s Man has burned through plenty of release dates before finally seeing the inside of cinemas in December. But it’s sat at just shy of $20m in the US, and will cross $50m worldwide this week. It’s struggled to make inroads in the shadow of Spidey.
Faring better, but still a long way shy of expectations, has been The Matrix Resurrections. It’s picked up $30.9m in the US – where it’s also available on the HBO Max streaming platform – and a further $75m outside America. Total gross now sits at just north of $100m, but again, that’s very low for a Matrix movie. Don’t expect Matrix 5 anytime soon.
Spidey aside, there’s still no shortage of uncertainty around cinemas and cinema releases. The next big blockbuster lining up? It was Sony’s Morbius at the end of the month. But even that’s now moved back three months. Who knows
