The BBFC is looking for input on how it classifies scenes of domestic violence on screen.
The British Board Of Film Classifications – the BBFC – regularly consults and reviews its certificates, and what’s appropriate for which rating. In doing so, it does a lot of work with people who have been on the receiving end of some of the unpleasant scenes we see in some of the movies that get made.
It’s now working with Women’s Aid on a consultation with survivors of domestic abuse, with a specific eye on informing just how the BBFC classifies scenes of domestic abuse on screen.
It’s looking in the first instance to set up focus groups in London and Manchester, where people taking part will be asked to watch three or four films in advance. Then, at the focus groups, further clips will be played, and everything discussed. Inevitably, there’s going to be some difficult material in the films themselves.
