The BBFC reveals that 2022ās most complained about movie was The Batman, with many people unhappy about its 15 certificate.
The BBFC has just issued its annual report, and as always, the fun from the classification body is to be found in the section entitled ‘feedback from the public’. This is the part of the report where we find out what people have been writing in to grumble out.
As it turns out, grumbles are in decline: the BBFC received just 84 complaints about classifications in 2022. This is the lowest I can remember. In 2019 it got 149, in 2020 there were 93, and in 2021 there were 109.
In this case, the most complaints over classifications were for
The Batman, to do with its 15 certificate. As the BBFC notes, it got 22 complaints and – beautifully – most of those came in before the film was released. The bone of contention? That the 15 certificate precluded taking children to see the film.
On the flip side of this, nine people wrote in about
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, questioning whether the 12A rating was appropriate for a film with such horror elements.
Six people took pen to paper – or sent an email – about the violence in, get this,
Minions: The Rise Of Gru. The U-certificate animation upset a small number who felt the violence was too strong for a certificate.
The BBFC also noted it received 1,573 complaints that weren’t classification-related, about the drama
The Lady Of Heaven. The film, a drama telling the story of a daughter of the prophet Muhammad, was described by complainants as “blasphemous and historically inaccurate”.
A further 19 people wrote in to complain that
The Kashmir Files was Islamophobic.
