Matt Reevesās follow-up to 2022ās The Batman gets a release date and is confirmed to exist outside of the new DC Universe.
Amid the slew of new announcements
revealed yesterday, we learned that Matt Reevesā follow-up to
The Batman is currently being scripted by the director himself. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that
The Batman Part II will be an āElseworldsā project, existing outside of the new DCU continuity.
None of that news is particularly surprising, although the planned 2025 release date does mean weāll be getting a
Batman movie in the same calendar year as a
Superman one, surely something to celebrate for die-hard fans of DC comic books.
Other announced āElseworldsā projects that will exist outside of the regular DCU continuity include
Joker: Folie à Deux with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga set for release October 4th 2024, the existing animated series
Teen Titans Go! and a separate
Superman movie produced by J.J. Abrams and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
At one point there were lots of ideas swirling about various spin-off TV shows that were supposedly headed to Warner Brosā streaming platform, HBO Max. Whilst a show centered around Colin Farrellās Penguin character has been confirmed, nothing else was announced at the announcement event yesterday, meaning that perhaps talk of an
Arkham Asylum series was simply conjecture.
DCU creative chief, James Gunn spoke briefly about
The Batman 2, stating “Matt is working on [
The Batman sequel], which he thinks of as a Batman Crime Saga, which also includes [
The Penguin] series, and it is its own thing. He’s hard at work on that. He came in and pitched us some amazing, really cool stuff the other day. So our plan is for that to continue.”
Thereās also another
Batman project in the works, this one featuring a DCU version of the character. That will be titled
The Brave And The Bold and presumably craft a markedly different tone to
The Batman's emo-darkness. We certainly like this idea: DC Films have always been at their best when theyāve been freed up to spin stories in creative ways and that certainly looks to be the case for Matt Reeves as he plans the next two films to complete his
Batman trilogy.
More as we hear it.
