The strong critical and commercial performance of Matt Reevesā first foray into Gotham City ā The Batman ā has earned the filmmaker a follow-up.
In news that wonāt be surprising to anybody, Warner Bros has announced that
The Batman will be getting a sequel.
The first film has been largely well-received, not to mention doing well in the spreadsheet stakes. Its $759m haul so far places it as the highest-earning movie of 2022 so far⦠not bad for a film that is in some ways perhaps, the least accessible of the Dark Knightās adventures with its emo-noir tone and three-hour running time.
The studio made the announcement at CinemaCon, thatās taken place in Las Vegas. It revealed that director Matt Reeves and star, Robert Pattinson would be returning as well. No production dates or release dates have been announced and nor has any further casting been revealed. Still, now the sequel is officially happening the discussions can begin as to where the next film might go and given the ultra-dark tone of the first film, we are curious as to where Reeves will take the next one. Traditionally,
Batman sequels have tended to take their sequels into even darker territory (such as in
Batman Returns, The Dark Knight) but with
The Batman almost feeling more like a tone poem than a story (thatās a compliment, to be clear) we arenāt sure just how much ādarkerā the world that Reeves has built could really get.
Still, it will be interesting to find out, plus we may yet have some sort of TV spin-off based around Arkham/The Penguin character or perhaps even Catwoman to flesh the world out before then, although details regarding those potential projects are scarce. Where do you think the next film should go? Are you happy thereās a sequel on the way or would you prefer the film to exist as a standalone entry in the world of Batman? Let us know your thoughts belowā¦
