We understand that we won’t be getting traditional box office reporting for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet as it begins its rollout in UK cinemas
With so much riding on the opening of Tenet from today, there’s inevitably going to be no shortage of scrutiny once box office figures start to come out for the film. It’s no exaggeration to say that the release plans of many upcoming films will be influenced by what happens over the next week or two.
Countering that, few expect the pattern of box office behaviour to follow usual norms. Nobody is expecting – or wanting, in this case – packed to the rafters multiplexes, and as such, the box office pattern is expected to alter. That usually with blockbuster cinema, it’s about landing a massive opening weekend number. In the current climate, that’s all but impossible.
We’ve now been told by a few industry insiders in the UK that a mail has been sent around (not from Warner Bros) explaining that the box office reporting for Tenet will be different.
The mail – that we’ve seen – says that it “will not be possible to evaluate the Tenet opening on a like-for-like basis with traditional summer tentpole releases” and as a result, “box office reporting will be restricted during the first few days of release”.
This seems to make perfect sense, in truth, but it does mean that anyone looking for a traditional box office number to be published on Monday is going to be out of luck. Instead, it may take a while for the full picture of Tenet’s box office performance to emerge.
