Rocketman star Taron Egerton reveals that he’s met with MCU boss Kevin Feige and states he’d love to land the role of Marvel’s grumpiest hero.
It’s not often we see stars break cover to reveal that they’re in the running for specific roles, especially when those roles are shrouded in the typically thick wall of silence that surrounds a Marvel Studios project. However, Rocketman star, Taron Egerton has punctured the usual veil of secrecy that surrounds such productions by revealing that he has had talks with Marvel Cinematic Universe boss, Kevin Feige, about playing Wolverine. Also known as Logan, the character is perhaps the hottest role yet to be cast in the MCU since Hugh Jackman hung up the claws following the excellent Logan, his 2017 swansong for a character he’d portrayed for the best part of two decades.
Egerton spoke with The New York Times, revealing that he’s discussed the role with Feige, and stating his interest in the part when asked by the outlet, saying “I don’t think it would be wrong to say that.”
Egerton would add, “I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it.”
The actor, who has developed his action chops in the Kingsman action franchise, has displayed an interest in the role for a couple of years now and you’d imagine he’d definitely be one of the frontrunners for the role.
Egerton also revealed in the interview that he regretted taking on roles in 2018’s Robin Hood and Billionaire Boys Club, stating that his motivations for accepting the parts were mainly financial: “I ignored my instincts on those two jobs because I was offered quite a lot of money to do them,” the actor said. “And that’s just fatal. You can’t pick roles that way.”
Whether Egerton does end up in the role of Logan remains to be seen but with Marvel presumably looking to shift its version of the X-Men into gear sooner rather than later, we’d imagine we’ll find out in the not too distant future. Kevin Feige revealed last week that the roadmap for the future of the MCU will soon become clearer, meaning we might soon know when to expect more mutants in our lives. As for Egerton, he’s hoping very much to be part of it, saying “hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”
