Dave Filoni seems open to the idea of Star Wars following Marvel, and going with an R-rated production. More here.
The incumbent chief creative officer at Lucasfilm is Dave Filoni, and with his feet very much under the table, he’s been chatting about where the Star Wars saga could be heading in the future.
Talking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the discussion turned to Disney’s upcoming release, Deadpool & Wolverine. Expected to be a huge hit, the movie is also the first to go out under the Disney name with an R-rating attached (notwithstanding the amount of fruity stuff available to stream on the Disney+ service), and the question was asked whether – in the future too – Star Wars too could go the same way.
Filoni seemed quite open to this. Adding the inevitable qualifier that “the bottom line is whatever we do, it has to be really well done”, Filoni didn’t shut the idea of R-rated Star Wars down. Instead, he offered that “I think it’s interesting” to the idea, noting that shows such as Andor have already taken the saga in quite a dark direction.
“I think that there’s an audience for that”, he added. “I think also with that audience, I also though want to still be hitting the imagination of the kids out there, so that they can grow up and appreciate those things”.
Nobody’s really expecting Star Wars to suddenly make a leap towards R-rated material, but Disney bosses will surely be watching with keen interest the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first foray into that territory. It’s not a great leap to suggest that if that works – and it looks like it will – it’ll at least accelerate any conversations that may already have been going around the topic.
You can find the podcast episode in question right here. The current Star Wars project, The Acolyte, is continuing its run on Disney+ now.
