After nearly a decade of development, the planned movie of Spy Vs Spy is finally going ahead, with Rawson Marshall Thurber set to direct.
Depending on where you were brought up, Spy Vs Spy was either a strip in Mad magazine, or a small collection of insanely entertaining 8-bit computer games where you tried to kill the other person through traps. Either way – or both ways – for some time there’s been chatter about getting a movie version off the ground, with the rights being picked up just shy of a decade ago.
Since then, the project has pretty much lingered in development hell, but it now seems as though there’s a way forward. Imagine Entertainment – which has been involved since 2011 – and Warner Bros are now pressing ahead with the film. Furthermore, a director has been hired.
Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for the likes of Skyscraper, Dodgeball and Central Intelligence, is now said to be in talks to take the movie on.
Most recently, he’s been filming the hugely expensive action movie Red Notice with Dwayne Johnson, the project that Universal snapped up and then sold on to Netflix, who can more easily fund its nine figure budget. The production of that has shut down half way through due to the current situation in the world, and so the immediate priority will be to get that film done. After that? It looks like Spy Vs Spy may just be next on the slate.
