Spike Jonze, the elusive filmmaker behind Her and Being John Malkovich, is working with Netflix, but on a TV series.
Weāve been waiting for the return of Spike Jonze to return to filmmaking ever since the credits rolled on 2014ās wonderful
Her, a movie that showed how Jonze was evolving his clever post-modern style of 1999ās
Being John Malkovich into (what was then) something new.
Her was and is a meta-modernist style that perfectly combined his trademark arch cleverness with something sentimental and beautiful.
But that was it.
Her marked Jonzeās last foray into filmmaking as he went to do stuff with
Vice media and we havenāt seen much of him since, although he did pop up with an acting cameo in last yearās
Babylon. Stories are circulating that Jonze is returning to storytelling with the moving image but alas, it seems like the lure of long-form TV has captured his imagination.
With only four movies to his name in the last 24 years, Jonze has never been what youād call prolific, and it looks like the wait for a new film from him wonāt be ending anytime soon. However, there is some comfort because the details of his planned Netflix show do sound pretty intriguing: itās a sci-fi series reportedly set to star Joaquin Phoenix, (the lead actor in 2014ās
Her). It might even be animated. It might even be Netflixās most expensive show. Ever.
If we canāt have Jonze making movies then it seems like this is the next best thing. Weāll bring you more details on this project as they emerge, but is sounds pretty promising so far, even if itās not the return to moviemaking we were holding out for.
