It looks like weāll be waiting over a year for the sequel to 2018ās Into The Spider-Verse ā itās been delayed until June 2023.
Released in 2018, the animated feature Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was a smash success, not only proving that Sony could still make a great Spider-Man movie without Marvel’s assistance (following the mixed reception to the Andrew Garfield films,) but also winning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Plus, āSpidey-Maniaā continues to run high following the rampant success of the live-action Spider-Man: No Way Home which borrowed lots of the multiverse ideas from Spider-Verse, to great success too. Thus, the release of a Spider-Verse sequel is a highly-anticipated moment, but itās one that weāre going to be waiting for longer than was originally planned.
As per an announcement in December, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part One) was due to arrive on October 7, 2022. The film has now been pushed back by Sony until June of 2023. This places it roughly a month in front of Sonyās Madame Web Spider-Man spin-off movie and we canāt help but wonder if this is Sony trying to shore up interest in that project. The recent Morbius did well at the box-office in spite of poor reviews as interest in No Way Home extended to anything with a Spider-Man association. Perhaps Sony is hoping that the same will happen here, too.
Across the Spider-Verse will be a two-parter, with the follow-up now landing in 2024. Producers, Chris Lord and Phil Miller have said about the sequel: “Miles’ story is an epic. We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realised it was two movies instead of one. We’re working on them both as we speak.
You can catch a first glimpse at the film, that was previewed back in December, below:
