The Spawn film is in āvery, very active developmentā says Jason Blum, despite the ongoing writersā strike.
Perhaps itās low-hanging fruit, but if thereās a film thatās tonally perfect for development hell, itās
Spawn. The comic book adaptation features a host of demonic characters whilst the beloved titular character is a Hellspawn, sent back from the realm of fire and brimstone after making a deal with the devil.
Whilst the comic book version of Spawn emerges from Hell within the first issue (if we recall correctly, itās been a few decades), itās taking the film adaptation much, much longer to escape the Hollywood version. Jamie Foxx was attached at one point,
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane was announced as the projectās writer and director around 2017 but here in 2023, the involvement of both men seems reduced and the project still doesnāt have a finished script. Oh, and thereās a writersā strike to contend with now as well.
Last we heard, back in October of last year, Scott Silver, the writer behind
Joker, Malcolm Spellman, the creator of
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and emerging writer Matt Mixon all joined the
Spawn project to create a fresh script which is currently situated at Blumhouse.
Blumhouse head honcho, Jason Blum has offered a fresh update on all things
Spawn and although progress still seems to be slow, heās keen to reassure fans that the film is still moving forwards:
āI would say you have a lot to hope for because itās in very very active development,ā Blum told
ComicBook.com, adding, āwhat needs to happen is that my fellow friends the writers and the studios need to figure out their differences and get back to writing, but weāve got a great group of folks putting it together, and my hope is that that movie ā my prediction is maybe weāll actually see a
Spawn movie in ā25. No promises, but thatās my prediction.ā
So there you go. Letās wait and see how accurate Blumās prediction is but given the projectās tortured history, we wouldnāt get too hung up on that 2025 release date.
