It looks like we’ll be waiting longer still to venture back into the violent and brash-talking world of HBO hit series The Sopranos.
The Many Saints Of Newark, the upcoming spin-off prequel movie based on The Sopranos TV show, has been delayed again by New Line and Warner Bros.
Originally intended for release in September 2020, the film was then pushed back six months to March 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was announced last night that the movie will now release in 2021, a full year after its originally-planned release.
Warner Bros perhaps isn’t under the same pressure to delay its projects as other studios because it’s committed to same day releases on US streaming platform HBO Max at the same time as cinemas. In theory, diminished returns as major US cinema markets remain closed shouldn’t be as big a factor as you might think for the studio, as it should offset those losses with increased subscriptions to its streaming service.
However, this decision does signal that Warner Bros’ strategy is somewhat fluid, and that it may still yet shift some of its blockbuster schedules if it feels it can maximise theatrical profits as well as securing subscriptions. This point is especially pertinent in light of the ongoing struggles of the US theatrical industry where key markets remain closed, with doubts appearing as to whether cinemas will even be open in time for the onset of blockbuster season in a few short months.

The Many Saints Of Newark, which wrapped filming before the onset of the pandemic, will not be an isolated one. Sony’s
Spider-Man spin-off,
Morbius, has already been delayed from its March slot to October, whilst Daniel Craig’s final outing as Bond in
No Time To Die is expected to follow suit. 2oth Century’s
The King’s Man and Sony’s
Cinderella, both currently due in March, could also do the same.
