The writers’ strike seems to have been the final nail in the coffin for the Spider-Man spin-off project, El Muerto.
Sony has removed the Spider-Man spin-off film,
El Muerto from its release schedule and put the film on hold indefinitely. The project, which was set to star rapper Bad Bunny, seemed to be struggling given that its scheduled release date was January of 2024 and the film hadn’t yet entered production.
The ongoing WGA writers’ strike seems to have been the final blow to the film’s chances, with the script reportedly not being hammered into shape before writers in the US collectively downed tools. Bad Bunny’s busy schedule as a musical megastar further complicates matters and it now looks like this one won’t happen.
The report continues the uneven trajectory for Sony’s series of Spidey spin-off films. Whilst the
Venom films have performed well commercially and this week’s
Kraven The Hunter trailer was positively received,
Morbius was roundly panned and some of the studio’s announced films in this ongoing venture feature characters that are so obscure, fans have wondered where the audience for them might be.
Still, Bad Bunny has legions of fans and he impressed with his turn in last year’s
Bullet Train (pictured) so maybe
El Muerto may have turned out to be a solid performer for the studio. It looks like we’ll never know now though, unless the studio elects to revive the project at some point in the future.
