Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been chatting about Spider-Man, multiverses, and things overlapping.
We may just have received the news many have been waiting for: that of Nicolas Cage’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), by rather circuitous means, may well be on the cards.
Producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord have been chatting on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about their upcoming sequel to the wonderful Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and they’ve been dropping tiny (but meaningful) hints that the film which started all of this pan-universe craziness may well taking things to the next stage of multiverse madness. When asked when if it was possible that the animated sequel, which itself takes lots of Spider-Men (and women, and erm, pigs,) from different universes, might collide with the MCU’s own multiverse, Miller said that “the Multiverse is big and wide. And all things grow. … Why would you think a Multiverse, in which many things are possible, that [those things are] not related?”
Interesting.
Lord would go on to describe the challenges of crafting a film where the story is so complicated, stating that “Amy Pascal, who was producer on Spider-Verse and also on live-action Spider-Mans … she’s been sort of our conduit to knowing exactly what’s going on in the Spider-Verse in various forms. The writers and director are all buddies of ours, so we sort of have been in the loop as far as what’s going on. And we are always trying to make sure we’re not stepping on each others toes and telling different types of stories and different themes and all that stuff, because people want an original story that feels new and interesting. It’s our job to give it to them.”
Whilst those quotes are far from confirmations, we’d be very surprised if the film didn’t somehow find a way of tying Sony’s Venom-verse, the MCU’s Multiverse and the Spider-verse together somehow, even if it’s in a fairly inconsequential fashion. After all, the Spider-Verse films are a true love letter to comic books, and no self-respecting Marvel comic book series ever missed the opportunity to feature some kind of team-up or crossover.
Whether this means Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir will find his way into the MCU through this backdoor route is of course, unconfirmed, but there’s a glimmer of hope… and frankly, a glimmer is all we need right now to sustain us through to October when the film launches.
