Antic fairytale sequel Shrek 5 has had its release date pushed back by six months. Expect to hear Mike Myers and his Scottish accent in December 2026.

UPDATE: Date change here. Universal has shifted the release dates of Minions 3 and Shrek 5 around. It now means that Minions 3 turns up a year earlier than originally planned, on 1st July 2026. Shrek 5 has been delayed by six months, to 23rd December 2026. Both will now release in the same year.

Here’s our original story from the summer of 2024…

ā€œNot too Far, Far Away,ā€ DreamWorks Animation wrote on Twitter/X/Muskbook last night (the 9th July) as it announced that fairytale comedy sequel Shrek 5 will emerge in 2026.

Respectfully, this is a lie. The space year 2026 is an incredibly long two years away. By then we’ll all be flying around using jetpacks and taking regular trips to a branch of McDonalds on the moon, where we’ll eat burgers and fries in pill form. Also, AI will have taken over the planet and none of us will have jobs.

On a more positive note, DreamWorks has confirmed that Mike Myers will return to voice the grouchy, green ogre of the title, Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as the voluble Donkey, and Cameron Diaz is again playing Princess Fiona.

There’s no word yet as to whether Antonio Banderas will pick up his CGI sword again as Puss in Boots, but given just how unexpectedly successful (and good) 2023’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish was, it’d seem almost strange if he didn’t.

Word of a fifth Shrek film first began circulating last April, when DreamWorks Animation creative partner Chris Meledandri (who also happens to be CEO of Illumination, the studio behind The Super Mario Bros Movie) revealed that the central cast had expressed ā€œtremendous enthusiasmā€ to reprise their roles in a sequel.

In June, Eddie Murphy informally announced that he’d already begun recording his lines for the next Shrek, and that his character will be getting his own spin-off movie.

“We started doing [Shrek 5] five months ago,ā€ he said during the promotional trail for another sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. ā€œI did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie]”.

By the 1st July 2026 – the precise date Shrek 5 will come out – the franchise will also be an incredible 25 years old. Time is both terrifying and cruel.
