Creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have given an exciting update on Shōgun season 2, with the series set to go into production this autumn.
Shōgun was undoubtedly one of the best TV shows of 2024, and despite the series adapting all of its source material, James Clavell’s novel of the same name, two more seasons went into early development almost immediately. No wonder: the series has swept the table at almost every awards show on the planet.
Chatting to Deadline at the Critics’ Choice Awards over the weekend, creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks revealed that the scripts for Shōgun season 2 are complete.
“We’re coming out of the writers room now,” Marks said. “We’re also done with the 10 episodes and we have our finale now. That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this. But we’re very excited about the plan.
“I think the thing to take away, more than anything, is how, I hope people are going to be surprised with some of the big ideas as soon as the first episode of part two. So, we’ll start there and see where it takes us for future stories. But we’re really excited about it, especially for [Hiroyuki Sanada].”
Separately, star Hiroyuki Sanada, who portrays Lord Toranaga, told Variety that the show is looking to begin production this autumn. At one point, the series was eyeing up a summer 2025 shoot, but that has now changed.
“We’re going to have half [of the Season 1] cast remaining, and then half new cast coming,” Sanada said at the AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards. “We are finding the best crew for next season now, so I’m excited.”
Shōgun hasn’t been officially greenlit by FX, but Sanada seems to have cleared his schedule, so we imagine an official announcement is on its way sooner rather than later.
All episodes of Shōgun are streaming on Disney+ in the UK and are well worth your time. You can find our coverage of the show here.
