Disney confirms that both Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Free Guy will be getting exclusive theatrical releases.
Disney boss Bob Chapek has announced that two of the studio’s upcoming titles, Marvel’s Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings and 20th Century Studios’ Free Guy, featuring Ryan Reynolds, will get exclusive theatrical releases, albeit shortened ones.
The news comes in the wake of the announcement that Jungle Cruise will be going straight to Disney+ Premier Access as well as cinemas, meaning that the film will be available for Disney+ subscribers to view, provided they pay an extra premium on top of their subscription.
Instead, Shang-Chi and Free Guy will get exclusive theatrical releases, but only for 45 days, rather than the usual 90.
The move marks out yet another strategy that Disney is experimenting, with several titles also getting the Premier Access treatment too. This is also the case for Black Widow and Cruella, with the latter next up at the end of this month.
The future of Disney’s Premier Access approach will probably depend on the success of these new releases, so it will be interesting to see which of these strategies pay off for the studio. We’ll keep you posted on any further release news as we hear it.
