The director of RRR has been chatting about how the planned sequel to one of this yearās surprise hits came together.
The producers of
RRR, the Telugu-language action film that was one of Netflixās surprise hits of 2022 have revealed that the the planned sequel was never originally in their thoughts.
The first film is a blazing hit of entertainment that delighted audiences and found itself rooted firmly in the top ten most watched films on the platform, often for many weeks at a time. Whilst a sequel
was announced last month,
RRR's producers have admitted that itās an idea they developed in the wake of the first filmās stunning success.
As
RRR begins to pick up some steam on the awards circuit, director S.S. Rajamouli spoke to
Variety and admitted that initially, there were no plans for a sequel to the film, until the perfect story idea came along.
“When we were making it, we didn’t have an idea about [a sequel],ā explained Rajamouli. āWith the initial success of it, we discussed a little bit and threw out some good ideas, but we didn’t feel there was a great idea that was worth pursuing, so we left it at thatā.
After the film hit big around the world though? āMy cousinā ā thatād be M M. Keeravani ā āwho is also a part of my core team — gave an idea which we felt like oh my God, this is a great idea. This is the idea that is worth pursuingā.
And thatās where things are. Keeravani is penning the screenplay at the moment to the film, and then thereās the challenge of how to make the film itself.
Weāre certainly excited that the team behind the film have found an idea that theyāre happy with. Weāll bring you more on the progress of
RRR 2 as we hear it, but in the meantime you can catch the original on Netflix where it is continuing to cultivate a huge following ahead of what is anticipated to be a busy awards season for the film. Very much deserved, too.
