Scream VI’s lead star is set to reunite with Radio Silence, the key creative trio behind the last two Scream films, on a new Universal monster movie.
Just a couple of days ago, we covered the rather interesting announcement that Radio Silence would be pausing their involvement on the Scream films to go make a monster movie for Universal.
The trio, consisting of co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella have put out two well-received Scream films in the space of just 14 months. Whilst little is known about the monster movie they’ll be making for Universal, it looks like they’ll be taking a familiar face from the Scream franchise to work with them.
Melissa Barrera, who has led the Scream ensemble as Sam Carpenter for the last two movies, will be working with Radio Silence on this new Universal project. Whilst next to nothing is known about it at the moment, it is expected that the film will be a standalone monster movie in the style of The Invisible Man or Renfield. We also know that the ‘project will centre ‘on a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being the titular character. Woe then befalls the kidnappers.’
According to some reports, the project was at one point titled Dracula’s Daughter, the title of a 1936 Universal sequel to Dracula. Should that be accurate, it stands to reason that Barrera may well be playing the title character, a direct descendant of Dracula himself who must use her vampiric abilities to take on the kidnappers mentioned in the synopsis.
That’s all speculation on our part, though, and we’ll wait and see what happens next. These Universal projects don’t always come together quickly or even at all. There was a Lord and Miller Universal project rumoured to be starring Channing Tatum which we assume is now dead, not to mention respective projects by Chloe Zhao and Derek Cianfrance that don’t seem to have gained any traction in the past couple of years.
Still, Radio Silence are nothing if not prolific so we’ll bet that this one makes it to production sooner rather than later. The trio behind 2019’s breakout success Ready Or Not have acquired a reputation for making successful female-led stories of violence and revenge and it looks like this project will be no different. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
