Martin Scorsese won’t be delivering his highly-anticipated period drama Killers Of The Flower Moon this year, as was announced back in February.
Following his successful 2019 collaboration with Netflix on The Irishman, Apple were quick to fund Martin Scorsese’s next lavish period drama, happy to appropriate some of the cachet and potential Oscar glory that comes from staging one of the filmmaker’s epic productions.
Killers Of The Flower Moon is that next production, but reports today are suggesting that it will be arriving later than expected.
The period drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro ‘takes place in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts a string of brutal murders of Osage Nation Native Americans, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror. The Osage Nation, who were the richest people per capita in the world, were killed one by one after oil was discovered on their land. As the death toll rose, the newly-created FBI took up the case and unraveled a chilling conspiracy and one of the most monstrous crimes in American history.’
Killers Of The Flower Moon has an expected budget of $200m and was originally slated for this coming November. When Will Smith’s Oscars ‘moment’ caused Apple to put his project, Emancipation, into stasis, the studio reportedly became very keen to make sure Killers Of The Flower Moon was its centrepiece for a run at the Oscars, having lost the Antoine Fuqua-directed slavery drama.
The announcement that the film would release this year came back in February. However, with Killers of the Flower Moon now set to miss the 2022 window for qualification, plans are afoot to instead give it a huge festival release next year, most likely at Cannes. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
