DVDs and Blu-rays are enjoying their last days at Sainsbury’s, as the supermarket starts selling off its stock of discs.
It was announced last year that one of Britain’s biggest supermarkets – Sainsbury’s – was getting out of the DVD and Blu-ray business. Now, following it stocking titles over the festive period, it’s begun selling off its remaining stock of discs.
It comes as sales of physical movie and TV media have declined again over the last 12 months, although the market is still sizeable. Not big enough for a supermarket though, and Sainsbury’s stores are reportedly selling off DVDs at £2 and Blu-rays at £3. That includes lots of Disney titles too.
This follows Argos – also part of the same group – selling off its physical movie discs last year.
There are still some supermarkets selling DVDs and Blu-rays, but I can confirm my local Asda has a minimal display. Even the music section is now packed with those £5 compilation discs of 100 songs at a time.
Lots of bargains around at the moment at least. But it’s a short term benefit, as finding physical movie media in physical stores is beginning to feel very much the exception rather than the norm.
