The Safdies’ planned Netflix collaboration with Adam Sandler to follow up 2019’s Uncut Gems won’t be a joint effort, according to reports.
The Safdie Brothers were set to shoot their follow-up to
Uncut Gems this year for Netflix and interest in the project is high, given that their 2019 collaboration
was seen as one of that year’s most thrilling dramas. However,
Above The Line is reporting that the duo are splitting, with Josh Safdie remaining on the Sandler/Netflix project as director.
It seems like Benny Safdie’s acting commitments are simply too demanding for him to continue collaborating with his brother. The actor has worked with luminaries like Claire Denis, Christopher Nolan (on the upcoming
Oppenheimer) and Paul Thomas Anderson and is enjoying a career surge both in front and behind the camera.
As we understand it then, Josh Safdie will helm the unnamed Adam Sandler film alone. Although details for the project are currently under wraps, Sandler offered a tantalising nugget as to what the plot of the film may revolve around a while ago, revealing “it’s in the sports memorabilia world. And I just kind of want them [the Safdies] to decide how they want to present it.”
Along with Sandler, it’s being reported that
Gael Garcia Bernal, Ben Affleck and Megan Thee Stallion are in line to slot into the project, and if those reported names all end up forming the ensemble, that will make quite the cast for the film. We await confirmation. We’re hoping that this one gets properly announced soon as it may have been Benny Safdie’s crowded schedule that was holding things up. We’ll bring you more on the new film as we hear it.
