Robert Pattinson, star of The Batman, goes to bat (sorry) for Batman & Robin, as well as every other Batman movie.
There was a point during the protracted making of The Batman when we’re sure Robert Pattinson was trolling us, as he claimed that he hadn’t even worked out to play the part of the Dark Knight. Naturally, this prompted howls of outrage from some corners of the internet, which have thankfully subsided now very promising footage of the actor have been revealed in the film’s trailers so far.
If there is anybody out there who still doubts Pattinson’s dedication to the role, then prepare to eat your words, as the actor has taken his commitment to Batman to new levels, by defending all previous Batman films. Yes. All of them.
Speaking to Total Film, Pattinson said: “out of all the comic-book characters and that kind of movie, I’ve seen every single one of the [Batman] movies in the cinema, which I can’t really say I’ve done for any other series.”
No doubt it’s a kind enough statement to open a dialogue about the character. However, Pattinson would then go on to underline his love for Batman, even to the point of enjoying the much-maligned Batman & Robin, considered by many to be the definition of a ‘bad’ movie. “I was always really looking forward to them coming out. There was the combination of just being so attracted to it, but also feeling like it’d had a lot of movies made about it, and none of them are bad movies. People kind of shit on some of them, but they’re not actually bad.”
The actor would go on to qualify his statement, and before you tear up your ‘Pat-Suit’ cosplay in disgust, he makes a good point. “They all kind of completely achieve what they set out to achieve, and they’re all really interesting, according to their time and place. I don’t know. I just had a weird instinct about it. But I’ve always loved the character.”
In fairness, even the ‘less-liked’ Schumacher films do exactly what they intended to do, and when viewed through that prism, can be decent too. Whether Pattinson is biased because he reportedly screen-tested in Val Kilmer’s Batsuit from the first Schumacher film is not mentioned in the interview, sadly. However, there are a few other interesting tidbits in there, so do check it out.
