Retro spookiness is in vogue at Netflix as Rob Zombie’s The Munsters movie heads to the streaming platform.
With Netflix presumably looking at all kinds of ways to arrest its current subscription slide, why not summon the spirit of the 1960s when TV was a new fad and all the rage?
That certainly seems to be the angle that the streaming platform is going for, as filmmaker Rob Zombie announced on Instagram that his upcoming remake of
The Munsters will be launching on Netflix alongside Tim Burton’s
Addams Family. The Munsters had been set for cinemas and for Universal’s Peacock platform, given that Universal financed it. Now a deal has been done – as rumoured – for Netflix to take the film instead.
With a September release in place, Zombie added that the film would release ‘at the same time’ as
Wednesday, Tim Burton’s upcoming reimagining of
The Addams Family. We’d presume that means within a similar window of time but who knows: with Netflix gunning for as many eyeballs as possible, could a retro-spook double release possess the kind of ‘event’ feel that Netflix executives are aiming for?
Despite Zombie’s penchant for gorier material,
The Munsters is confirmed as a PG, meaning that along with
Wednesday, younger fans of spooky material will have something to enjoy on the platform this Halloween. (That’s a topic on which you can catch our thoughts
here, by the way.) The film is set to be an origin tale, detailing the formation of the family. It stars Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, and Dan Roebuck as Grandpa, aka The Count. We’ll bring you more on
